Sanya Joint Laboratory for Marine Science
About the Joint Laboratory
The Sanya Comprehensive Joint Laboratory for Marine Science (hereinafter “the Joint Laboratory”) is a state‑level research platform originally established in 1996 with the approval of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It is jointly operated by three leading institutions: the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO), CAS; the Institute of Deep‑sea Science and Engineering (IDSSE), CAS; and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Headquartered at the CAS Hainan Tropical Marine Biological Research Station (a National Field Observation and Research Station and a CERN site), the Joint Laboratory leverages a wealth of shared facilities—including coastal aquaculture platforms, deep‑sea engineering laboratories, state‑key laboratories, four large research vessels, the manned submersibles Shenhai Yongshi and Fendouzhe, and the state‑of‑the‑art Marine Coastal Laboratory at HKUST.
